Covid 19 UK Travel Update
(2min read)
Following on from our previous article the UK government has recently announced new covid-19 travel restrictions to the UK travel traffic light list. This has seen seven countries as well as Portugal, which was previously on the “green list”, change their travel restrictions for UK travellers.
From 8th June Portugal is now on the “amber list” which means holidaymakers returning home from there will have to now quarantine at home for 10 days. The reason the UK government chose to take Portugal off the green list was because of an increase in case of rates in the country – including the emergence of a “Nepal variant” which is believed to be a mutation of the Indian/Delta version of the virus. At present, the mutation has not officially been categorised as a variant.
The traffic light list is where countries are classed as green, amber or red – with different rules about quarantine and Covid tests. These rules currently apply to England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The UK government has also stated that you should not holiday in red or amber destinations, which means most countries. Additionally, you do not have to quarantine after visiting green list countries.
As well as Portugal moving to the amber list, Afghanistan, Bahrain, Costa Rica, Egypt, Sudan, Trinidad and Tobago and Sri Lanka have been added to the red list.
The traffic light system is due to be reviewed every three weeks, with countries currently on the “green list” can also go on a “watch list” if concerns emerge.
